Jeffrey Dean Morgan Seemingly Confirms TWD Spinoff Filming Wrap

Sep 28, 2023

In a recent tweet, Jeffrey Dean Morgan has seemingly confirmed that his Walking Dead spinoff with Lauren Cohan, Dead City, has finished filming.

The Walking Dead star Jeffrey Dean Morgan seemingly confirms that his upcoming spinoff series, The Walking Dead: Dead City, has finished filming. Morgan has been on The Walking Dead since the end of season 6 as Negan, the notorious, baseball bat-wielding leader of the Saviors. After his defeat at the hands of multiple communities led by Rick Grimes, Negan has slowly reformed into a trusted member of the group, albeit one that still draws wary glances from those who suffered at his hands the most.

One survivor who still holds a reasonable grudge against Negan is Maggie Rhee. During Negan's first major appearance in The Walking Dead season 7 premiere, he killed Maggie's husband Glenn by beating him to death with Lucille, his signature baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire. Though Negan is on his way to total reformation after a six-year time jump, Maggie still doesn't trust Negan enough to call him a full-fledged ally. Their strained relationship seems like it will continue in The Walking Dead: Dead City, a spinoff set after the events of The Walking Dead proper. The show, premiering on AMC in April of next year, sees Maggie and Negan travel to New York City for currently unknown reasons.

In a recent tweet from Morgan, the star of The Walking Dead seemingly confirms that The Walking Dead: Dead City has finished filming its first season. Responding to a tweet from a fan wondering where Morgan's typical support for the Seattle Seahawks has gone this football season, Morgan answers by indicating he's just now getting back into the football spirit because he "just wrapped."

With The Walking Dead: Dead City arriving in April, it's no surprise that the six-episode spinoff finished filming recently, as production has been ongoing in Manhattan and New Jersey since July 2022. What exactly drives Maggie and Negan to the Big Apple is unclear, though The Walking Dead's final episodes seem like they can give viewers answers. It's possible the powerful CRM plays a role in Maggie and Negan's relocation, as they have a history of capturing characters like the show's former protagonist Rick Grimes. Actor Norman Reedus, who will be starring in his own Daryl Dixon spinoff, stated Daryl won't be going to his new location - France - of his own accord, opening the door for a similar fate to befall Maggie and Negan.

While there's potential that something drives Maggie and Negan toward New York City on purpose, their flimsy relationship with one another makes it unlikely they'd go on a long journey together of their own volition. Even so, The Walking Dead still has four episodes left in its final season. There's still the prospect that, within its last four episodes, the show establishes a reason why two characters who have feuded with one another for so many seasons would be willing to put their differences aside. With filming for The Walking Dead: Dead City seemingly over and the plot still shrouded in mystery, The Walking Dead itself has plenty of time to set expectations for Maggie and Negan's next chapter in this zombie franchise.
