James Gunn announces the DC Universe movie Superman has finished filming. A new era of DC is on its way to the big and small screens through Gunn's DC Universe, which is currently working on multiple movies and TV shows. The first film that will be rolling out of DC Studios' upcoming franchise is Superman, starring David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel.
Superman will be the first film released in James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe, and the Man of Steel reboot boasts an impressive cast.
While Gunn couldn't attend this year's San Diego Comic-Con due to the ongoing production, the DC Studios co-CEO announced on the penultimate day of July that they've finally finished principal photography. Gunn took to social media to leave a heartfelt message and thank his cast and crew, sharing the following:
Ironically, as Superman wrapped, The Fantastic Four: First Steps began filming on the very same day. The two superhero movies are scheduled to release within two weeks of each other in 2025. Superman will now enter post-production while the DC Universe audience waits patiently for the first trailer to get released.
As this will also be a DC Universe where superheroes are already established, Superman's role will be more crucial than ever for this franchise.
As Superman story details are still being kept heavily under wraps, Gunn has spoken a lot about how the reboot will focus on the Man of Tomorrow being a good man who is in a world that isn't always the same. This message is emphasized in Gunn's Superman wrap-up post, which is only fitting as the filmmaker celebrates the entire production. By elevating this message once again, it serves as a reminder of the direction his film will take, especially as the opening movie for the DC Universe.
The idea that Superman is going to have to face a society that doesn't always reward kindness speaks to the deeper layers Gunn wants to tackle with the DC icon. With characters like Lex Luthor in the story, who will be the Man of Steel's biggest enemy, it will be interesting to see how that drives other people in the world to resent Superman. As this will also be a DC Universe where superheroes are already established, Superman's role will be more crucial than ever for this franchise.
While time will tell how long it will take for the first Superman trailer to be released, it will certainly be worth the wait. With everything Gunn has been saying about his vision for Krypton's last son, Superman sounds like it is on the right track in setting the foundation for the DC Universe. Hopefully, before 2024 closes out, Gunn will share some new footage from Superman ahead of its release in 2025.

Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman is the first movie in Warner Bros.' rebooted DC Universe to center around the titular comic book hero. It introduces a new version of the Man of Steel after Henry Cavill's departure from the role, honoring the character's roots as "the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way."

It had better pull something truly unique for it to be worth watching in the deluge of super hero movies.
